These walls tell a story

Lasting visual stories that remind students they are seen, supported, and capable of great things.

01 · Listen

We start with a conversation.

Every school has a story—its values, its mascot, the students who fill its halls. Before anything is sketched, I want to understand yours.

02 · Design

I return with a full-color mockup.

You’ll see the design superimposed onto your actual space—mascot, imagery, and all—before a single brush touches the wall.

03 · Paint

I install it myself.

Professional and insured, quietly out of the way of your school day. Each mural is finished with a clear protective coat and an original poem written to accompany the piece.

Beneath the Sun

Like bobcats bold beneath the sky, we lift our youth, their spirits high. With courage and hope, we show the way— to dream, to grow, to seize each day. English and Spanish, two voices, one song, building unity as we journey along. Honoring differences, together we shine, bright as the sun, our voices combined. Sunflowers rise, their roots deep and true. Grounded in purpose, in all that we do. Mariposas flutter, bright wings in flight, symbols of change, of hope, of light. Friendship blooms, and kindness takes wing, at DIA where every voice may sing. With hearts uplifted, our spirits fly, under the endless, ever-reaching sky.

Wingate Elementary

Beginning with our Wingate Explorers, artist Anna Hileman aimed to demonstrate the vast world ahead for our kids while integrating the extraordinary features of this place we call home, a stepping stone for the journey ahead. As no two butterflies are alike and each butterfly contains every color of the rainbow, each student and staff member's hand print has been placed within a ROYGBIV (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo, violet) spectrum, signifying their vital part and attribution to the Wingate community and the world. Additionally, students and staff chose a letter or shape to make their handprint even more distinctive. The final prints to be placed were from Trigger, Wingate's adored therapy dog. The monarch butterfly was chosen for its locality to this area and as a symbol of the transformation, strength, and journey of Wingate's students and families.

Furthermore, Anna included local characteristics such as the monument, wild horse, dinosaur fossil, native wildflowers, petroglyphs, and bicycle tracks. The scorpion pays homage to Wingate's history, signifying the connection of our past, present, and future, while the stars remind us all to reach for our dreams. Thank you to the Wingate PTO, who planned, funded, and supported this art installation, and Grand Junction Home Depot, Lowe's, and FCI for supplies and scaffolding.

A single commission across two surfaces, capturing the school’s core values of education, unity, and a nurturing environment for students.

Chapter 01

Exterior Mural

A majestic eagle takes center stage, symbolizing strength, freedom, and ambition. With its wings spread wide, it encourages students to pursue their dreams and reach new heights.

Adjacent stands a vigilant mother eagle, embodying protection and guidance, a reflection of the dedication of the school’s faculty and staff. Beneath the eagle, its wing transforms into a flowing river, symbolizing the local landscape and the continuous flow of knowledge and life.

The Bookcliff mountain range and delicate peach blossoms celebrate the area’s unique attributes and the natural beauty inherent in one’s journey through life.

Chapter 02

Interior Atrium Ribbon

80 feet · Sunrise to night

Inside, the mural continues through an 80-foot ribbon around the atrium that begins at sunrise and moves into night. The imagery tells a story of growth and possibility, from a protected nest to eagles soaring toward the stars.

Bright, vibrant colors energize the space while calming native flora and fauna ground the mural in place, surrounding students each day with reminders of support, movement, and reaching for their dreams.
